Spay Neuter Program

Promoting the routine sterilization of pets offers the only "light at the end of the tunnel" for animal welfare groups and others concerned with the plight of unwanted animals. CAAWS devotes a significant percentage of its overall budget to spay/neuter advocacy. Presently we offer the following:

  • Prepaid certificates for the mandatory sterilization of any animal adopted from CAAWS.
  • "$25.00 Off" Coupons for a spay/neuter surgery available to anyone on request.
Send a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your request to:
    CAAWS
    P.O. Box 77765
    Baton Rouge, LA 70879
Your coupon will then be mailed to you.
You may also pick up a coupon at the CAAWS building on Saturday adoption days
  • CAAWS is working to develop pro-active spay/neuter programs. We have contacted East Baton Rouge Animal Control and LSU Vet School to create a comprehensive plan to eliminate pet overpopulation.

Cat Spay/Neuter Programs 2008

 LSU SPAY DAY

Spay Day is offered by the LSU Vet School.  Cat Haven is running the 2008 program, with CAAWS and Spay Baton Rouge participating.  The $25/cat fee includes the spay/neuter, ear tip (if needed,) and vaccinations (kittens must be 4 mos. of age for the Rabies vaccination.)  In addition to feral and stray cats, this program is offered to low-income families as well as families who take in stray cats/kittens.  Anyone unable to pay the $25/cat for feral colonies can receive assistance from the CAAWS Feral TNR Program, although, donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.  CAAWS offers loan traps (with sec. dep.) for trapping ferals.

Spay Day occurs once a month, usually the 2nd Sunday of each month, except in cases of holidays or LSU events.  The spay/neuter slots are available by appointment only--no walk-ins, and apply to cats only.  The cats are brought to the LSU Small Animal Clinic between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. on Spay Day, and must be picked up around 4:00 p.m. that same day.  Pre and post op instructions are provided.

CAAWS LOW COST/FREE SPAY/NEUTER:

Applicants must be approved for this program, which is offered to low income families.  The cost is $35.00 per cat, which includes the Rabies vaccination (must be 4 months of age.)  We offer five free spay/neuters per month.  For this program, appointments are scheduled at local participating veterinarians and vouchers are issued by CAAWS.

FERAL TNR PROGRAM:

This program is offered to residents who are having problems with multiplying feral/stray cats in neighborhoods, businesses, etc.  It usually involves colonies of cats, many of which are abandoned unaltered pets, who continue to multiply.  With proper TNR and caretaking, these colonies can be Trapped, Neutered/spayed and Returned (TNR) to live out their lives, without continuing to reproduce.  The TNR program has been proven to be the humane alternative of controlling cat reproduction, rather than continually killing these cats at animal control facilities, which has been proven to be ineffective.  This program is offered free, however, donations are greatly appreciated to ensure funding for continued success.  CAAWS loans traps (with a security deposit) for trapping feral cats.

CAAWS COUPON PROGRAM:

This program is offered to anyone, and can be used for both dogs and cats.  The $25.00 off spay/neuter coupon can be applied to the normal spay/neuter charges at any participating veterinarian.  Coupons can be picked up during adoption days (Sat. 11:00-3:00) at the CAAWS shelter at 6357 Quinn Drive, Baton Rouge.

Note:  We recommend kittens to be at least 8-10 weeks of age and at least 2 pounds for spay/neuter.  We cannot spay nursing moms unless kittens are eating food in addition to nursing.

TRAPS

Traps are available for trapping ferals (or strays,) with a security deposit.  Traps must be reserved (we have a limited number) and picked up, then returned after the cats are released.  These traps are available ONLY for use with our TNR program. Trapping instructions are included.  These traps are to be used ONLY in accordance with our TNR Program.  It is a violation to use our traps to transport any animal to animal control, or to relocate cats without the knowledge, cooperation and guidance of CAAWS.

Please let me know if you are interested in any of these programs.
