What is CAAWS

Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is an all-volunteer, non-profit humane society, which exists on private donations and the dues of its members. CAAWS has been finding homes for animals, promoting spay/neuter programs, and educating the public on animal welfare since 1979.

We use donations for

We have no paid staff so all money donated to CAAWS goes directly to animal care, medical expenses, shelter expenses, pet food, or pet supplies. If you want your donation to go toward a certain cause, you may earmark it for that purpose, such as heartworm treatment, spay/neuter, pet toys, humane education, building maintenance, etc.

Why you should become a member

Members receive our bimonthly print newsletter, which contains articles on pet care and current events, listings of CAAWS activities, and pet memorials. Members also have the right to vote for board members at our annual meeting in December and at any special meetings that require a vote. Your membership is the primary source of income for the everyday activities of CAAWS, from paying vet bills to paying the electric bill.

If you'd rather not become a member but would still like to give a donation you can do so online by clicking here.

Who can become a member

Anyone can be a member, but only adults of at least 18 years of age may vote at our elections. All Members, including junior Members, can double their impact by encouraging others to join, or by volunteering at Pet Adoption Day or any of our other events.
